North West Industrial Warehouse Racking Safety

Any business which uses industrial pallet racking or storage systems will have a series of regulations (established by the HSE’s warehousing and storage guide) with which they must comply if they are to meet their safety obligations.

Compliance isn’t about needless box ticking and red tape. It’s about ensuring that, in an environment which presents numerous risks, those risks are assessed and mitigated. The HSE’s guidance helps ensure no one uses forklifts unless they are adequately trained, ensures speed restrictions are consistent with driver capabilities and – crucially from our perspective – ensures pallet and cantilever racking systems in the North West are designed and maintained for safe operation.

Contractor compliance: The law doesn’t ask any business to suddenly become an expert in the safe design and construction of industrial storage systems – but it does expect you to employ people who are.

The HSE’s Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 require you to employ a contractor with the experience and credentials to deliver the project safely and successfully. If you don’t, the HSE or your local authority will be within their rights to suspend work, enforce additional, corrective work to put things right, or even prosecute you.

Racking safety: The law requires that the industrial warehouse racking used by your North West business must be regularly inspected by a “responsible person”. But every year it must also undergo a more rigorous inspection, to be carried out by what the HSE describes as a “technically competent person” (ie an expert). They should produce a written report with observations and proposals.
