How can I make more efficient use of warehouse airspace?

You don’t want to move premises, but you’re convinced your industrial storage space could offer more in terms of space and efficiency if you used more of the space above you. Discover the potential of a mezzanine floor.

Chances are, great swathes of your warehouse will be filled with floor to ceiling pallet racking. But when the warehouse is also used for office space, training suites, packing or wrapping stations etc it’s all too easy for the space above them to be lost.

Mezzanine flooring offers a wide range of options for making more effective use of all your industrial storage space.

A mezzanine floor is an ‘intermediate floor’ which effectively create two levels of floor space (on the mezzanine and below the mezzanine) where previously there was only the ground floor. How you configure the mezzanine flooring and what you use it for is entirely up to you. You could, for example, choose to wall off the ground floor area below the mezzanine to create offices, training or canteen facilities. Above, you could house small item storage, packing stations, or a returns bay. Alternatively, you could switch the arrangement and place offices upstairs on the mezzanine.

Benefits of mezzanine flooring

The most obvious benefit of a mezzanine floor is that you can do more with the existing space. There’s no need to invest in separate facilities if you can pack more into the space you already have.

Additionally, the benefits include:

  • Flexibility: If plans change and you need to repurpose one part of the mezzanine for something else, it’s relatively easy to do it
  • Cost: A mezzanine floor is almost inevitably a cheaper option than buying or leasing additional office or storage space elsewhere
  • Customisable: Simple and utilitarian or well-equipped and finished to the standard you require – whether it’s intended to be storage space or the MD’s office, you can tailor your mezzanine floor to your requirements
  • No planning permission: As mezzanines are typically free standing you can usually install one without planning permission, although you will still need to comply with building and fire regulations
